Sewing machine project, update 1: what happens next?
In July 2024 we told our supporters about the sewing machine project. Here is how it is progressing.
The good news: seven sewing machines delivered
First, I would like to share the good news: as of today we have already delivered seven sewing machines! The women who applied for the project are currently learning to use the machines under the guidance of an experienced woman. This takes about four weeks. After that, they will produce clothing for the local textile industry.
With all the work involved, we don't want to lose sight of our goal: people should be able to live from their work – in a way that their dignity is strengthened by it. It is not about maximising profit, but about securing a livelihood through work.
That is why we decided that 50% of the wages belong to the women who do the work. The other 50% benefits the children on site: food, clothing, medicine, energy and everything else. So the women work half for themselves, and with the other half the whole community benefits – especially the orphans who no longer have parents.
The less good news
Buying the machines means we are currently short of donations for essential food. For the next four weeks we need around €2,500 to feed the 116 children and the mothers of the half-orphans properly.
We would also like to buy the planned 25 machines as soon as possible so the project can reach its full potential. For the 18 machines still missing we need €3,600 – one machine costs €200. If you would like to give towards this, please use the reference “Nähmaschine” (sewing machine).
Thank you for your support!
